OH THE GAMES PEOPLE PLAY

BRIDGE MIX
Once upon a time everybody's mother played
bridge at least once a week. Thus depending
on the day one might return from school to
be met by brood of chicks in hats and gloves
devouring bridge mix beneath a black cloud
of cigarette smoke. Not to be left out - males
gathered one night a week to play a round of
poker, complain about their wives, and drink
heavily. Along the way cool types learned to
play backgammon in the sixties and seventies.
Then of course the more plebeian of us played
our own way. Usually a rousing game of Uker,
Checkers, Yahtzee, Pinnochle, or Old Maid.
BACK TO SQUARE ONE
Even the most sophisticated played chess.
Thus there was a time when a game table
was de riguer for the finest of homes. Each
elegantly sitting ready for action at all times.
As time passed said modes of interaction
became passe. Causing many to consider
such surfaces a waste of space. Fortunately
time marches on and what's old becomes
new once more. Which explains the current
demand for gaming tables of all shapes and
sizes. Apparently Millennials like to play
games almost as much as their great grand
parents did. Thus once again it's game on!
CHECK MATE
Recently we came across this game
table at an auction back in Fairfield
County Connecticut. Manufactured
by the Weiman Furniture Company
in the fifties - it's a work of art. And
yet quite adaptable to today's world.
A hidden inlaid chess board awaits
beneath an embossed leather top.
A pull out is drawer the perfect spot
for a computer key board. Meaning
this table scores whether you play
on-line or the old-fashioned way!
