DOWN THE GARDEN PATH

COLD WAR
We all want what we can't have. Hence
now that we're deep into winter, many
fantasize about greener pastures. As the
polar vortex hovers above much of this
country, we've little choice but to dream.
Fortunately we've no lack of inspiration.
The mailbox is now overflowing with
a plethora of seed catalogs. Meanwhile
our Meyer lemon tree's branches are full
of fruit. And even the most ordinary of
grocery store posies will put a smile on
anyone's face. So rather than sit and stew,
maybe it's time for us all to blossom...

MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM
Given we've got several more months to chill,
why not try to make the best of it? Rather than
hide under the bedcovers now is no better time
to plan your garden beds. However that can be
challenging amidst five foot high snow drifts
and wind chills of thirty below. That's why it's
best to surround oneself with inspiration. Be it
a file of garden "clips" that you've pulled from
your favorite magazines, or a botanical bevy
that you've gathered on Pinterest, or from the
pages of that new garden tome sitting on your
coffee table. Wherever you live, it's time to let
your imagination bloom. So go ahead, dig in!

BRIGHT IDEAS
Even if you're not a snow bird, winter
can still be your time to bask in the sun.
One of our favorite spaces in our 1917
house is the sun room (shown at left).
What better place to chill? Somehow
on even the coldest of days spending
an hour within brightens my outlook.
Especially when a cup of tea sits ready
and waiting a lovely Chinese porcelain
garden stool. Which proves that year
round one can bring the outside in and
visa versa. All you have to do is think
beyond winter's self imposed ice box.
