SCARLET FEVER

WELL RED
While Rhett Butler may have claimed to
not give a damn, most of us can't resist a
bit of rouge. The empress of both Vogue
and Bazaar, Diana Vreeland had only one
request of decorator Billy Baldwin when
redecorating her Park Avenue apartment.
Her decorative dictum was that he create
a "garden in hell." While such drama may
get your blood racing, it's not necessarily
for the faint of heart. Yet even while some
find such a red alert disconcerting, others
find that turning up the heat can be quite
comforting. Talk about a living womb...
RARE OPPORTUNITY
On my first visit to San Francisco
we dined at the legendary Ernie's.
So famous that it played a role in
Hitchcock's Vertigo. Said spot's
walls were covered with ruby red
flocked velvet. No wonder almost
every mid-century steak house saw
red given research indicated one's
appetite grew within a red room.
Hence even today who doesn't
love slipping into a red leather
banquette and sipping a martini
as you devour a bloody rare fillet?
REDRUM
While neither Frank nor I are brave
enough to live a la red herrings, we
do enjoy setting up the occasional
impromptu hot spot. Amongst our
favorite tables is mixing a melange
of red hues for maximum effect.
One doesn't have to live in a fire
station to warm things up. Scarlet,
ruby, fuchsia, vermilion, pink and
even purple work surprisingly well
together. Anybody can do it. We've
got a stack of those Coalport plates
ready for you to take home NOW!
RED ALERT
Do you believe in love at first sight?
These French slipper chairs remind
us of Lucy and Ricky's Connecticut

upholstery and quirky wood frames
make them all the more appealing.
In our east coast warehouse, they
may never make it to Montana. So
