SUNSHINE STATE
LIKE BUTTAH
As the new year dawns it can be challenging to see
the light. Therefore it's no wonder that snowbirds
head south for a bit of sunshine once winter falls.
One need not slather up in sunscreen in order to
brighten up. Yellow has always been considered a
standout. For centuries it was the official hue of the
Chinese imperial family. Today anybody can live
like a king in a room swathed in a warm and sunny
hue. Interior design doyenne Nancy Lancaster
never threw shade. Instead she painted her barrel
vaulted London drawing room (above) the color
of "buttah." The end result guaranteed that all,
everything and everyone within simply glowed.
GOLDEN RULE
Over thirty years ago David Hicks
was asked by his niece to lighten
up her rather dreary dining room.
He opted to create a goldenrod
infused with canary yellow box.
It's brightness being the perfect
counterpoint to four massive but
dark portraits by van Dyke. The
master then added white painted
furniture, chic blue upholstery,
and one of his classic geometric
carpets. Making it all too modern.
And to this day it's still a WOW!
What goes around... comes around. And
lately it seems that everything I consider
old is suddenly new again. All of the hip
trends of my youth are now considered
the "latest." In part because great things
only get better with age. Long ago in
the late seventies through early eighties
artist Robert Baranet painted a series of
bold abstracts for his eighteenth century
Connecticut farmhouse. At the time they
were deemed quite daring. Making a big
impression on a young art lover (me).
"Sunny Afternoon" (left) was painted in
1981. Upon first seeing it, I dreamed of
nothing more than someday hanging it
on my wall. Which is why we're thrilled
that C+V HOME is now able to offer it
for purchase. Wherever it's next home
is, this amazing work of art is sure to
make a statement. So while the holidays
may be over - isn't it time to "self gift"
yourself something sunny from C+V?
