BEEN THERE... DONE THAT

HAND ME DOWNS
While some might beg to differ, I'm not
afraid of growing old. A lover of things
antique, I adore anything with a patina.
Wear and tear adds elegance to almost
anything. Be it an old wooden spoon or
some Louis the sixteenth relic. Hence I
have an aversion for anything shiny and
new as it lacks the added aura of things
loved time and time again. Which is the
reason Frank and I opened C+V HOME.
We love offering the best of times past
to potential new owners in the here and
now. And if we're lucky... forever more.
DEJA VU
As a creative types we know that
most of what we deem new is in
fact reinvention of prior trends.
As fashion comes and goes it is rehashed in a nostalgic attempt
to recapture times past. Hence
if anybody had told me a decade
ago that "mid-century modern"
would be all of the rage, I'd have
laughed. Now the hottest items
on the auction floor hail from
my youth. And suddenly look
fresh and modern once more.
THE PAST RECYCLED
For most if not all of the twentieth century
antiques were symbols of prestige. A very
few were blessed to inherit furniture, art,
and other flotsam and jetsam from prior
generations. Therefore "newbies" wanted to
emulate those fortunate enough to be manor
born. Designer Mario Buatta is credited with
bringing "English Country" back into vogue.
His famous rooms were layered with chintz, antiques, and bibelots in an effort to replicate
the appearance of historical precedence. And
while his rooms now appears a bit to over the
top, one must admit they do look cozy.
ROUND TRIP EXCURSION
Chic comes and goes. Thus it's of no surprise
that we're seeing a resurgence of interest in
"brown" furniture - particularly English or
French. Consider this room by designer Mark
Sikes for the Kips Bay Show House currently
being held in Manhattan. His mix of a mossy
green and peacock blue seems modern yet
familiar. As are most of said space's elements.
What stands out is the big, brown commode.
and suddenly what's old is... new again. The
good news is you don't have to ship in New
York to bag a brown beauty. C+V HOME
has plenty of oldies but goodies. Stop by!
