WHO GREW?
GROWTH EXPERIENCE
You encounter something old yet new.
While complete strangers,
it speaks to you.
So you take home something
you know nothing about.
Consider this lovely floral still life.
Set within an early 20th century hand carved frame,
we just knew it was special.
However it wasn't until we took a deep dive
that we learned
who, what, when, and where.
WESTERN EXPOSURE
Born in Nebraska, Francis W. Van Vreeland
showed early promise
as a painter, designer, and bon vivant.
Studying at both the Cincinatti Art Academy
and the Academie Julian in Paris.
GONE TO POT
Soon thereafter Francis became
an important decorative artist
at the Rookwood art pottery company.
Said work which is now coveted
by collectors worldwide.
Maintaining a studio in New York City.
Until he moved west to Hollywood
in the early 1920s.
MAN OF THE HOUR
Quickly "Toby" became a leader
of the Los Angeles art scene.
Profusely published and thus quite famous.
Primarily known as a water colorist,
his popular work featured
Dutch scenes and landscapes.
Dutch scenes and landscapes.
Many of which hung in the homes of locals.
Including stars of the silver screen.
FLOWER POWER
However his floral paintings -
often in oil on canvas
are now deemed most desirable.
At some point this work featuring poppies
and blue violets (or pansies)
traveled to Montana.
traveled to Montana.
Where it's owner had it's original frame
restored, re-gilded, and re-glazed.
WHO GREW?
All of the above was new to us.
Therefore we learned something
in the process.
in the process.
Proving that this bunch of posies
is more special than we ever knew.
And now they can be yours.
