BACK AT YOU

REAR WINDOW
Good design is a reflection of it's time and place.
Yet some spaces designed eons ago continue to
stand the test of time. Their beauty and elegance
transcending passing trends and foibles. In 2011
Celerie Kemble designed the library above for
the Kips Bay Show House. Enrobed in classic
paneling it's "shell" could not be altered. Thus
in order to create a truly over the top space, Ms.
Kemble installed a spectacular gold and silver
Églomisé "sky" above. Created by Miriam Ellner
it was a tour de force. And to this day it's impact
still resonates as vividly in my memory as when
I first entered the room. Wow is always in style.

EAST MEETS WEST
Verre Églomisé is the application
of paint and gilding on the reverse
side of a piece of glass. The final
result being a mirror finish which
protects the art  behind. Dating
as far back to ancient Rome this
decorative approach has been a
perennial favorite. However it is
named for Jean-Baptiste Glomy.
A french decorator who revived
its use in the eighteenth century.
Later inspiring Chinese artisans
to produce "export" variations.

UPON REFLECTION
However many experts consider
Jean Dupas 1934 murals created
for the grand salon of the French
Art Deco ocean liner Normandie
to be the penultimate expression
of Églomisé. A corner of which
now hangs in the Metropolitan
Museum of Art. Still dazzling all
who bask in their magnificence.
Looking as modern as when they
first sailed eighty four years ago.

DOUBLE VISION
Many of the treasures C+V sells
involve love at first sight. Post
finding this Églomisé top duo
we just had to have them. Yet
it seems that some things must
be seen to be believed. At least
that's our rationale for why they
haven't sold. All good things
must come to an end. So while
no reflection on their glory we
just marked these lovelies down.
