AS SEEN ON TV

BLAST FROM THE PAST
After the second world war everybody wanted
to move to the suburbs. Therefore it came as no
surprise when Ricky and Lucy Riccardo escaped
New York City for the sylvan wilds of Fairfield
County Connecticut. Their country manse was
the epitome of mid-century Americana. A barn
like dwelling mixing maple and chintz in ways
that seemed quite modern. After the trauma of
a world at war we all needed to come home to
something reassuringly familiar. Which is why
so many decorated in a historical context. Soon
early American, colonial, provincial, and country
were the epitome of chic. OLD became NEW.
RE-RUNS
Few today know of Ozzie and Harriet, nor want
to be Ward or June. Yet there is something about
the bravado of mid-century reinterpretations of
the past which suddenly seem perfect for today.
Therefore in challenging times such as this such
old friends engage us all over again. And while
one may tire of watching sitcom reruns, many
are rediscovering the charms of retroactive TV
decor. No wonder we consider the pair of chairs
that follow to be just as charming as when they
first graced some mid-century country French
abode. Their low slung slipper stance and witty
red and orange upholstery are still a wow now!
